Cyclopia

Main article: Cyclopia

Awww...look at the cute little baby!

How adorable!

AHHHHHHHH!!! MONSTER!!

*Whew* that’s better. I can handle that one...

Gather round my children, and I shall tell you a tale. A tale of something terrible. A tale of something so horrific, it will haunt not only your nightmares, but also your long plane trips and restaurant outings. That’s right; I speak of babies, those little bundles of endless screams and spit-ups. As you travel through this life you’re bound to encounter some. Hell, you might have even popped out a few. *gasp*
Still, it’s way too easy to hate on defenseless infants. Some might say it’s as easy as stealing candy from an overused cliché. This is because babies are so disgustingly coddled by each and every culture. Alright, so the Canaanites and their creative penchant for sacrificing babies to the fire god Moloch might be a slight exception. And yes, admittedly Vikings weren’t big fans either, but besides those guys, everyone universally loves babies. I’m pretty sure it’s some law or something.

So it’s fair to say that this world can be a tough place for the infant aversive. You’re lumped in with some of the most bloodthirsty cultures in history. Refuse to hold someone's baby enough and it’s only a matter of time before you’re labeled a Nazi. So what’s a person to do?

In actuality, Hitler had an appreciation for babies, thus proving his pure and complete evil.

Well my friends, take heart. Lord Kristopf is here to inform you that not all children are frightening. Some, in fact, are actually incredibly frightening. Today’s example of this is the very rare birth defect known as Cyclopia.

Like most truly badass things, the nature of this disorder has its roots founded in antiquity. In this case it’s identified with the mythical race of Cyclops, brutish humanoids who were most easily identified by their singular, centralized eye.

No,  not this cyclops.

Sadly, the Cyclops were driven to extinction through the complex dynamics of habitat loss and monocles falling out of fashion. We humans were left with their rich architectural heritage and, since scientists are horribly uncreative and reach back to old Latin words to name nearly every new discovery, it was inevitable that the proud Cyclops race would be eventually reduced the namesake of an abhorrent birth defect.

If only we could have learned to be more tolerant.  If only...

Nevertheless, you’re probably asking how such abominations come into being. Well much of that answer is scientific and deals with boring things like protein expression, but there is one entertaining way; ingesting an evil plant known as vetch weed. Don’t worry, it’s teratogenic and not mutagenic, so you should probably only find it threatening if you’re currently still a zygote.

But with the knowledge that you can actually now make your own baby Cyclops, it does raise a few interesting potentials. For example, are you looking for a creative method of abortion? Perhaps you’re trying to thwart a welfare mom from producing another litter? Or could you be an only child, threatened by the arrival of a younger brother or sister you never wanted?

I’ve got a simple answer for you. Vetch weed pancakes, milkshakes, cookies, you name it. One thing is for sure, when the potential octo-mom sees what sort of demon-spawn ends up coming out of her, she’ll probably think long and hard before trying for another. :D

Only you can prevent these types of tragedies.

Awesomeness tip: Still don't believe Cyclops actually existed? Check out their legacy in the Cyclopean masonry article. :P

The Numbers Gang

Main article: The numbers gang

Whether you grew up playing video games or not, you’ve gotta admit that life would be at least slightly more entertaining if it were more like one. Who doesn't like the idea of a moderately-challenging-yet-hopefully-beatable adventure that allows you the enduring legacy of your initials in the high score list instead of just pooping out a couple of ultimately disappointing children? Gold coins, giant mushrooms, and fire flowers all sound a lot more interesting then meager paychecks, expensive, slow-working medications, and handguns (well, maybe not handguns).

And this, of course, is why subcultures exist. Subcultures are sort of the extroverts way of giving life that interactive, themed feel that video games do for the escapist introvert. They typically spring up with more frequency in places that have greater-then-normal social inequality or too much free time. Take high school for example. Remember how many crazy cliques and shit existed there? Really, nobody wants to think about bothersome things like curfews, detention, and academic achievement. Thus, teenagers wear embarrassingly ill-fitting clothing and meticulously climb (or fall) down an impeccably structured popularity hierarchy.

Kids these days...

On the other end of the life spectrum, senior citizens are subject to subcultures as well. Many retirees join the Red Hat Society or outlaw biker gangs. Gone, apparently, are the days of just reading the daily paper, building ships in bottles, and quietly waiting for grim death.

Yet, perhaps the most renown subcultures belong to land of adults. Again, popping up more often where there’s more perceived inequalities and too much free time. Ergo, it should come as little surprise that one of the most feared subcultures comes from what's perhaps our most oppressive and free-time bequeathing institution of all; prison.

Following the infallible universal law #28, that things are generally more hardcore in Africa, perhaps the most feared of all the world's prison gangs is South Africa’s “The Numbers Gang”. They might sound like a nostalgic group of prohibition-era gangsters, with members named “Knuckles” and “Shifty”, or perhaps just a bumbling assortment of inept bad guys on some boring kids math-based game show, but trust me when I say that all the time they could have put into thinking up a more hardcore name was apparently spent on them actually becoming hardcore.

Don't F with Africa...

Concordantly, were you to put a quarter into the arcade game called “being-an-economically-disadvantaged-poor-black-youth-in-South-Africa-who-just-got-caught-for-robbing-a-grocery-store-and-sentenced-to-Pollsmoor-prison” your horrific quest would probably look something like this:

Level 1: Joining the gang

Upon your arrival in prison, one of the first and most critical challenges would be successfully answering a riddle posited to you by your friendly local senior-rep for the gang. The example question given in the article is the following:

“It is raining, you are standing under and umbrella. I say to you I am getting wet, I may get sick. What are you going to do?”

If your answer was “I invite you to share my umbrella”, you might want to consider pressing the reset button. At that point you're dubbed an adorable “wyfie” and given housework (as wyfie’s are apparently not very liberated yet). This is of course why you actually never teach children to share, especially those children whom you know are most likely going to end up in prison.

During this interrogation, you might also want to consider not ask clarifying questions such as whether or not the umbrella will fly you far, far away were you to tightly close your eyes and make a wish. Or if the fictional umbrella gives you a certain control over legions of small, flightless birds, similar Batman’s nemesis, The Penguin.

Really wanna share an umbrella with this guy?

If, however, your answer was “I will come out into the rain with you”, congratulations! You just made it to level 2. You’re well on the way to assaulting people yourself!

Level 2-49: Rising through the ranks

Believe it or not, The Numbers Gang was actually founded in 1911, back when gangs in America consisted of trouser clad children rolling hoops with a stick. Even stranger, the gang has folk-legend history more convoluted then that of Mormonism. Contrasting with American prison gangs where you likely spend all your time selling commissary, earning a GED, and creating poorly written rap songs, in South Africa you learn bizarre rituals and a cool, secret language.

Levels 2-49 are mostly spent rising through the ranks. Your rank is based on the experience score recorded on the upper left-hand corner of your screen. This experience is gathered by performing gross human rights violations upon your fellow prisoners.

...And for you game completionists, special side missions can be undertaken, such as entering into the gangs complicated judiciary (yes, they ironically have one) or competing in a “general election” which, much like elsewhere, means wholesale slaughter of everyone around you.

Level 50: The end-boss John Mongrel

So you’ve made it to the last level. At this point, you’ve taken a beautiful wyfie and now get laid at a whim (unfortunately, never with a women), you have a professional, yet slightly ridiculous South African-based title like “magistrate” or “inspector”, and you wield a sharpened toothbrush with the skill and finesse of a rabid Zorro.

Yet one day your wyfie goes mysteriously missing...

Your last mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to dethrone John Mongrel, the leader of the gang, and assume his role as de facto ruler of Pollsmoor prison.

Also, he likely kidnapped your wyfie as that helps build to the climax (I’m speaking of narrative climax BTW).

Like any good end-game boss however, this will not be easy. Mongrel subsists exclusively on the flesh of fellow prisoners, regenerates magic points by sexually assaulting them, and wields a +5 shank of flaming.

Once he’s defeated however, you’re treated to the heart-warming final theatric sequence where you’re reunited with your beloved wyfie, a roll of the end credits, and a musical score that sounds strangely like a screaming cacophony of the thousands of people you defiled over the years during your bloody ascent to power.

Bonus points for escaping at some point.

Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the sequel; “Paroled: The recidivism”.

Awesomeness tip: Fair warning, this article is actually pretty disturbing, even beyond the level of the Popobawa. If you’re up for actually reading it (really?), as a bonus, see if you can figure out what the “slow puncture” is. If you can, describe the process to someone you care about and watch their reaction. Priceless. :D

Popobawa

Main article: Popobawa

HOLY JEBUS, where do I start with this F’d up article?

Ok...well...imagine if you will, some form of utopia. Let’s say, for example, some mythical, androgynous kingdom of elves, playing their questionable little flutes and living high in some canopy village on a distant, nearly unreachable land.

[insert warm, fuzzy feeling]

Now, we all know that every fiction story needs a narrative conflict or it’s not really much of a story, right? In the case of elves, conflict generally arises in the form of some darker, far less attractive adversary ceaselessly crashing upon their emerald shores, trying to raze their harmonious little world for no seemingly logical reason (although that does sound pretty fun...little elven bastards...).

Anyway, returning to reality, Wikipedia is that magical utopia. Everyday countless numbers of loathsome, fiendish articles all try to penetrate her silicon chastity belt of encyclopedic excellence. Each is looking for the established credibility that being a Wikipedia article brings, which is obviously absolute and unquestionable authority on the subject.

How bad can this problem really be, you ask? Why can't Wikipedia stop being such an icy, perfectionistic bitch like that girl that wouldn't date you in high school and just accept you for the awkward individual you are? Well, assuming I’m able to overlook your blatant wikiblasphemy, I would suggest you check out the creepy article underworld known as Deletionpedia. You see, just like in religon and fairytails, articles have afterlives too. Deletionpedia is where bad articles go when they die. There they stay for eternity, never to return...

...Well, except in the cases when notability is established months or years later and they actually do come back. So I guess, to extend the metaphor, that would be like when Jesus was resurrected from hell on the 7th day or whatever.

So anyway, take just a moment and picture yourself as a Wikipedia soldier drone, on patrol, keyboard locked and loaded, and coming across this freshly created article:

Popobawa is a Bat like Sexual Creature that resembles the creature from Jeepers Creepers terrorising people in Tanzania. Popobawa has been known to strike in Zanzibar and Dar-es-salaam. He Sodomises men and the rules state that if a victim does not tell people, Popobawa will keep on sodomising him until he does so. This creature can also be compared to a Chupacabra from latin america with slight differences, thus Popobawa does not seem to harm people or animals and he has wings. Popobawa is purely a sexual Demon. In the late 1990's to 2000'2 Popobawa ran rampant in Coastal Tanzania, such that in some instances people (especially men) were seen sleeping outside with fears of being sodomised. So far there are no known reports of Popobawa attacking Women.

Riiiiiiight...

Now, I don’t know about you, but this whole thing comes off to me as a completely bat-shit crazy story written by some bi-curious teenager. DELETE...DELETEDELETEDELETEDELETEDELETE.

But wait a sec...

hold on...

...turns out that the Popobawa is...real?

That’s right, you heard me, REAL.

I mean, not like scholarly zoological real, or even really crackpot cryptozoology real, more like a shadow people real. But with hundreds, if not thousands now, of people claiming to have been sodomized in the dead of the night by a marauding bat-demon, it’s real enough to keep me from wanting to travel to Tanzania.

Remember universal law #27? That things were usually more hardcore in the 1940’s? Well rule #28 is more temporally current and geographically based version of that:

Universal law #28: Things are generally more hardcore in Africa.

Look, I don’t even have to get into touchy stuff like ebola21st-century genocides, and frequent, catastrophic famine; just look at the animals. Lions, hyenas, even the damn bees. "Africanized" honeybees are better known as "killer bees" because they're so badass. And it's this "Africanized" effect that obviously transfers over to less tangable entities too. For example, we have the reclusive, yet lovable, bigfoot, who misbehaves by raiding your camp site. Africa, in turn, has the Popobawa, who raids the very essence of your being...repeatedly.

Non-africanized Killer Bees. Note how much less letal they appear.

Keep in mind that rule #28 isn't a racial or even cultural thing, although the African people themselves are undoubtedly resilient given their residency in Africa. I have no doubt that my pasty white ass would have quickly become lion chow had I chosen the alternative career path of subsistence farmer.

Awesomeness tip: The Popobawa article has been substantially cleaned up since his freewheelin’, overly-sexualized ways, but you can still see some of the craziness in the titles of his source articles. Make sure to check out the wikilinks in the “See also” section to read up on similar preternatural rapists. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing. :\

Pit of despair

Main article: Pit of despair

Universal law #374: Within every profession there are good people and bad.

Take police work for example, some police officers probably try hard to enforce the law fairly and with due respect to all policy and procedure. Others might just do the best they can. They also don’t mind taking an occasional free coffee or 10 minute nap when no one is looking. Still others might pull a full-on, hardcore Rodney King moment and ultimately send their sprawling metropolis into a riotous state of martial law for a week or so

Oops!

Still, there are some professions where it's hard to see one side or the other. Perhaps the noble profession of clowning comes to mind. It’s actually pretty hard to meet a diabolical clown in real life, although movies assure us that they’re out there.

Nothing disturbing about that.

On the flip side, there are therapists. Everyone knows it’s absolutely and totally impossible to find one that’s a jerk. If you think you can/have, you’re wrong. You simply need more therapy.

But wait a minute. The abovementioned infallable law clearly states that every profession has good people and bad, so where are the evil therapists? Well, it turns out that most badasses in psychology turn away from a touchy-feely clinical career and become research psychologists, so that they might better lurk in the dark regions of the human subconscious and find out, on a more collective level, what exactly it is that makes you tick.

Of all the fiendish and malevolent research psychologists, one stands out from the rest for the cruel experiments he performed in his later, more unhinged years. Dr. Harry Harlow studied the effects of isolation on monkeys. While that might not sound very hardcore, keep in mind these were mostly baby monkeys (We all know how people freak out when anything bad happens that’s baby related) and that Dr. Harlow had a unique penchant for driving monkeys completely and utterly mad, toying with them, throwing them away, and then doing it all over again. This made him Dr. Mengele in the eyes of the animal liberation movement.

The actual “pit of despair” refers to a laboratory contraption designed to isolate monkeys and break their small, furry, little wills. You might think that the media or one of his disaffected research students coined the phase. Nope. Dr. Harlow himself enjoyed calling it that. He was just that intense.

So, as you can probably imagine, ever since Dr. Harlow’s infamous experiments, its been pretty fashionable to hate on the guy. Numerous people have claimed that all he did was prove what we already know, that separating a highly social creature from social interaction would break it, that it was common sense. To that I must say: beotch please. Common sense would suggest that if you cut a chicken’s head off it wouldn’t keep running around for a while. Common sense would also suggest that the world is flat, because, well, it just obviously looks flat from down here. Without science and empirical experimentation we never really know anything, and for this reason alone I tip my hat to him. Man did some dirty work so you could get an awesome wikipedia article...

Yet, even more importantly, Dr. Harlow shows that there really is a real life basis for the mad scientist archetype. I mean, sure, he didn’t breed a chimera or create some super-virus or something, but his slightly disturbed ways of crazy experimentation sound like a familiar plot line. In a alternate universe, Dr. Harlow could have easily created an army of killer robots or a death ray. You’re lucky he stuck to monkeys!

Would you rather have had this??

Awesomeness tip: Read the pit of despair article, it’s a fascinating story. Just know that if you’re a sensitive person (haha) it will make you sad. If you survived it, didn’t hear the sound of tiny, tiny tears on your keyboard, and the subject actually interested you, read up on some of the other now ethically-prohibited psychology experiments that took place back in the day, like Dr. Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment, and of course Dr. Milgram's shocking experiment on authority.
